The 11th annual Civil War Seminar (free and open to the public) will be held all day Saturday, Feb. 27

The 11th annual Civil War Seminar at Longwood University, which is free and open to the public, will be held all day Saturday, Feb. 27, in Molnar Recital Hall in Wygal. This year's program is "The Cavalry: Weapons, Leaders, and Battles."

Presentations include:

  • "Horsepower and Firepower: Weapons of the Cavalry"
  • "Little Phil: A Reassessment of the Civil War Leadership of Gen. Philip H. Sheridan"
  • "'He stood out from the great war canvas': Jeb Stuart"
  • "The Battle of Brandy Station: Attack and Defense of the Daremark Line"
  • "Overview of cavalry operations in the 1864 Valley Campaign"

The seminar, which will begin at 9:25 a.m. (doors open at 9) and end by 4:30 p.m., is sponsored by Appomattox Court House National Historical Park; Eastern National (which operates the bookstore there); the Longwood Department of History, Political Science & Philosophy; and the Center for Southside Virginia History at Longwood. Parking is available on the Longwood campus except in 24-hour reserved spaces, handicapped or tow-away zones, and lunch is available in Dorrill Dining Hall.
