2008 News Releases

Prince Edward County Relay to be held April 4-5

March 11, 2008

The Prince Edward County Relay for Life will be held on Stubbs Lawn at Longwood University on April 4-5.   Relay for Life is an annual community event that benefits the American Cancer Society. The Longwood University/Prince Edward County event has an impressive history with Relay, raising $99,247 in just five years.  In 2007, the event raised $34,905.  The goal for this year’s Relay is $40,000.

The 2008 Relay will honor Sarah Terry, a well-respected community leader who lost her battle with cancer in December 2007.  A “Paint the Town Purple” campaign is dedicated to the many community contributions achieved by Terry.  Leading up to the Relay, businesses and individuals are encouraged to display purple bows available for a $25 donation to the American Cancer Society. Purple bows may be purchased at the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce Office, Real Living Cornerstone, Barnes & Noble at Longwood, and Longwood University Health & Fitness Center.  In addition to her service on numerous boards and committees in Farmville, Terry was immediate past chair and former executive director of the Farmville Chamber of Commerce and a legislative aide to Congressman Virgil Goode of the Fifth District of Virginia.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, April 4, cancer survivors will be celebrated at the Survivors’ Banquet which is open to all cancer survivors.  The Relay will begin at 7 p.m. with remarks by Longwood President Patricia Cormier followed by the Survivors’ Lap.  The Luminaria Ceremony will be held from 9-9:30 p.m.  Luminarias (white bags lit by battery-operated candles) placed in memory or in honor of loved ones affected by cancer are available for a contribution to the American Cancer Society.  Entertainment will be provided throughout the evening as walkers make their way around the Stubbs Lawn during the 12-hour event.

Any family, civic organization, business, church, or other group may form a team.  Teams may register for the event by visiting www.events.cancer.org/rfllongwooduniversity
