Dr. Sherry T. Sandkam, associate dean of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Graduate School, has been appointed interim dean of Longwood University’s office of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Sandkam, a Longwood graduate, is serving while the search for a replacement for Dr. Sue McCullough is conducted. Dr. McCullough, who had been director of graduate and extended studies, left recently to become director of the University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center.

Dr. Sandkam has worked in graduate education atVCU since 1979. She holds a collateral faculty appointment as assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership in the School of Education, is graduate program director of the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies program, and directs the Preparing Future Faculty and Graduate School Mentorship Programs.

"I started out in the admissions office doing graduate admissions and counseling and became assistant dean in charge of admission," she said. "Now (at VCU) I focus on enrolled student support services."

While working at VCU and raising a family, Dr. Sandkam earned an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. in education from VCU. A Richmond native, she graduated magna cum laude from Longwood in 1970 with a B.A. in Spanish, finishing in three years. She was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Lambda Iota Tau, national honorary societies for freshmen and literature, respectively.

"I had a wonderful time at Longwood," she said. "I remember fondly my major advisers, Dr. Maria Silveira and (the late) Dr. Anita Ernouf, and I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of campus life – well, some not as much as others. My last job at Longwood, after all, was waiting tables in the dining hall! I am really pleased for this chance to once again be part of the Longwood community."
