Dr. Cormier to serve as Longwood’s President through 2010

April 8, 2008

During its March 3 meeting, the Longwood University Board of Visitors’ Executive Committee unanimously approved a motion to amend Longwood President Patricia Cormier’s contract. Dr. Cormier will serve Longwood University as president through the 2010 academic year.

Dr. Cormier was named the 24th president of Longwood University in April 1996, began her tenure in August 1996, and was inaugurated in April 1997. She has been an administrator in higher education for nearly 40 years, serving as chief academic officer at Winthrop University, in key vice presidential positions at the University of Pennsylvania where she was also an associate dean and a tenured member of the faculty, and as vice president for development and alumni relations at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Cormier has master’s and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in health education from Boston University.

At Longwood, Dr. Cormier has worked with the campus community to develop and implement a new Mission, Vision, and Goals Statement for the University.  This strategic plan for the future of Longwood is embodied in the first sentence of the Mission Statement: “To transform capable men and women into citizen leaders, fully engaged in the world around them.”
