Longwood's Health and Fitness Center earns LEED gold rating
April 25, 2008
Dr. Cormier unveils the LEED plague.
As part of Longwood University’s Earth Day events on April 22, a ceremony was held to unveil a plaque recognizing the Health and Fitness Center’s Gold Certification Rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Council’s Green Building Rating System recognizes energy savings for new and existing buildings. Longwood President Cormier unveiled the glass plaque and made remarks commending the design team and construction firm for its environmentally-friendly construction methods and recycling of construction byproducts and waste materials.
The Health and Fitness Center, which opened in August 2007, is the first LEED gold certified higher education building in Virginia and the first LEED gold certified student recreation center in the Southeast. To learn more about Longwood’s Green Campus go to: http://www.longwood.edu/greencampus/
