Mary Ellen Andrews Trivette, 1989 graduate of Longwood University, has been selected as the Virginia Beach Reading Teacher of the Year, an annual award presented by the Virginia Reading Council.

Trivette is a third grade teacher at Indian Lakes Elementary School in Virginia Beach where she has taught for two years. Before joining the faculty at Indian Lakes, she taught at Hermitage Elementary School in Virginia Beach for 16 years. She was recently selected to serve on the State Committee for Reviewing and Revising the Standards of Learning (SOLs).

“Reading is a lifelong behavior around which much of the world centers,” said Trivette. “I believe that every child, regardless of his/her background, is capable of becoming a successful, strategic reader.”

In her nomination letter, Indian Lakes principal Kathleen Starr said, “Mary Ellen is known for her ability to connect with and reach students, inspiring even the most reluctant readers. An example of her diligence is the fact that her entire class earned a perfect score of 600 on the social studies SOL test last spring.”

Trivette, a native of Virginia Beach, lives in Norfolk with her husband, Tim, and 14 year-old son, Alex.
