November 17, 2009

A fire that originated in a clothes dryer late Monday night (Nov. 16) in a fourth floor apartment at Longwood Landings, has been extinguished and there have been no injuries.

Assistant Farmville Fire Chief Duane Merritt stated that the fire activated the sprinkler and alarm system in the Longwood-managed apartment located in Northeast Building 3, and all residents of the building were evacuated.  Longwood University campus police, the Farmville Fire Department, the Hampden-Sydney Fire Department and Rice Fire Department responded to the fire, which began at 11:38 p.m.

Four students in the affected apartment were displaced and the Student Affairs office has found them housing for the evening at the Hampton Inn. An additional four students and one resident adviser have also been displaced on lower floors due to water damage. Officials have confirmed that the building is secure and residents will be returning to their rooms shortly.
