2009 News Releases

Longwood University Relay to be held April 3-4

March 20, 2009

Relay for Life

"Fight Back, Go Green" theme of 2009 Relay

The Longwood University Relay for Life will be held on Stubbs Mall at Longwood University on April 3-4.

Relay for Life is an annual community event that benefits the American Cancer Society. This year's focus is lymphoma, the most common blood cancer and the third most common cancer diagnosed in children (more than 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lymphoma this year). The theme this year is "Fight Back, Go Green!" for three reasons: it ties into Longwood's two-year sustainability theme, green signifies this type of cancer; and the 2009 class color is green.

Longwood University has an impressive history with Relay.  The local event raised $8,292 in 2003.  Over the past four years, the event hosted by Longwood has contributed more than $80,000 (with $32,651 raised in 2008) to the American Cancer Society.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, April 3, cancer survivors will be celebrated at the Survivors' Banquet, which is open to all cancer survivors.  Survivors interested in attending the Survivors' Banquet can contact Mandie Shifflet at lurflsurvivorship@yahoo.com or 434.531.5198.  The Relay will begin at 7 p.m. with remarks by Longwood's Dean of Students Kerstin Soderlund followed by the Survivors' Lap and the Caregivers' Lap. The Luminaria Ceremony will be held from 9-9:30 p.m.  Luminaria (white bags lit by battery-operated candles) placed in memory or in honor of loved ones affected by cancer are available for a contribution to the American Cancer Society. Entertainment will be provided throughout the evening as walkers make their way around the Stubbs Mall during the 12-hour event.

Any family, civic organization, business, church, or other group may form or join a team. Teams may register for the event by visiting www.relayforlife.org/longwooduniversity .
