Longwood sorority to host "Buying Black Friday" event for local businesses

April 1, 2009

Customers who patronize local African-American-owned busineses Friday, April 10, will receive a discount, thanks to a "Buying Black Friday" effort sponsored by a Longwood University sorority.

"The event is designed to raise awareness among Longwood faculty, staff and students of supporting local black-owned businesses," said Jameka Jones, who holds several offices in the Lambda Delta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Farmville businesses in which discounts are available all day April 10 are clothing stores City Wear and Owen's Originals; Healthy Living, a healthy food and Jamaican food store; Deloris' Beauty Salon; and Carrington's Music. Discounts will be given to anyone coming in with a flyer or Longwood student ID. For flyers or more information, contact the program chairman, Tara Carr, at tara.carr@live.longwood.edu or visit the chapter's web site, http://lancer.longwood.edu/org/lambdadeltaaka.

This is the first time that the Lambda Delta chapter has held such an event. The sorority hopes to continue to do this in the future.

"As a society, we are often head to major corporations for our needs rather than supporting local businesses," Jones said. "In the current economic crisis, many small businesses aren't thriving. We're encouraging people to support these black-owned businesses, hoping they will be satisfied and then consistently use these businesses in the future."
