Construction fire in Bedford addition extinguished
August 23, 2010
Around 2 p.m. this afternoon (Monday, August 23) a small fire broke out in the upper level of the Bedford addition, which is currently under construction.
Initial reports indicate that the fire started from a welding operation that generated sparks which ignited some loose insulation. One worker is being treated for smoke inhalation.
For safety reasons, Bedford Hall, Wygal Hall, the Center for Communication Studies and Theatre, and Greenwood Library have been evacuated. These buildings will re-open for classes and normal operations at 4:00 pm today (Monday 23 August 2010).
Fire companies from Farmville, Prospect, Hampden-Sydney, Rice, and Darlington Heights as well as the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad all responded to the incident, and the fire was successfully extinguished.
