Nominations sought for three prestigious faculty awards

The Faculty Awards Committee is requesting nominations of faculty members for three prestigious awards. The winners of these awards - the Maria Bristow Starke Faculty Excellence Award, the Maude Glenn Raiford Teaching Award, and the Junior Faculty Award of Excellence - will be announced at Convocation during the fall 2011 semester.

Nominations should include a letter of nomination, no longer than two pages, using 12-point font. Nomination letters should be sent via email to Stephanie Buchert (bucherts@longwood.edu) before the deadline of 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2011. After this date, the nominated faculty members will be asked to submit their nomination packages/supporting materials electronically.

To be nominated for the Starke Award, a faculty member must hold the rank of associate or full professor and must have a minimum of two years of full-time teaching at Longwood. The award is for a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in scholarship, teaching, and other professional activities. The award honors a 1914 Longwood graduate and was established by her son.

To be nominated for the Raiford Award, a faculty member must hold the rank of associate or full professor and must have a minimum of two years of full-time teaching at Longwood. The award is for a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching. The award honors a 1921 Longwood graduate and was established by the late philanthropist J.B. Fuqua. Raiford was Fuqua's high school teacher and mentor.

To be nominated for the Junior Faculty Award, a faculty member must be in her/his third, fourth, or fifth year of full-time teaching, with a minimum of two years at Longwood. The award is for an early career faculty member who demonstrates excellence in scholarship, teaching, and other professional activities.
