April 25, 2012

Dr. David Shoenthal

Dr. David Shoenthal, associate professor of mathematics and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, was recently elected chair of the MD-DC-VA section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Shoenthal was elected to the highest office of the section during the spring 2012 meeting April 13-14 at Stevenson University's Owings Mills campus, near Baltimore. He will serve as chair-elect from 2012-13, will be chair in 2013-15, and will be past-chair in 2015-16. All of these are positions are on the Executive Committee.

Shoenthal has been active in the MD-DC-VA section of the MAA since 2004. He was local co-coordinator of a 2006 sectional MAA meeting at Longwood and Hampden-Sydney College, and at various sectional meetings he has been judge for undergraduate student papers, a speaker, a contributing panelist, and a participant in Section NExT, a program for new or recent Ph.D.'s in the mathematical sciences. From 2008 to 2010, he was program chair of the Section.

Six Longwood faculty and three Longwood students participated in the recent sectional MAA meeting. Students Matt Jobrack, Crystal Peoples and Chris Thatcher competed in the Radical Dash competition, in which students answer a variety of mathematical challenges around the campus where the meeting is held. "It's a little like The Amazing Race reality show but much more mathematically-oriented," Shoenthal said.

At the meeting, Dr. Wendy Smith, assistant professor of mathematics education, presented a paper, "The Impact of Post-Secondary Teaching Methods in Gen-Ed Math Courses," during the contributed papers session. Faculty members Drs. Jackie Hall, Leigh Lunsford, Philip Poplin and Thomas Wears also attended the meeting.
