New Steinway piano to make unofficial debut

A free concert featuring three Longwood University choirs will be presented on Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Jarman Hall. Performing will be the 20-member University Men's Choir, 45-member University Women's Choir, and 25-member Camerata singers. Several smaller groups and combinations of singers will also perform.

Selections for the concert include folk songs from Spain, Hungary, Ireland, and Canada; some Jewish folk songs; one traditional Latin prayer; a popular Renaissance madrigal; and American styles of folk and ragtime. Most of the selections will be performed in English, with one in Spanish, one in Latin, and two in French. The concert finale will feature all three choirs, with four-hand piano accompaniment by Carole Harper and Liza Kinzer, and a small percussion band.

Longwood's new Steinway Concert Grand piano will make its unofficial debut at this concert. The piano arrived on campus in December and is permanently housed in Jarman Auditorium. The model D concert piano measures 8' 11 ¾" in length and has an ebony finish with the gold "Steinway & Sons" insignia. A piano concert, featuring the new Steinway, is being planned for August.
