Gov. Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling will address Virginia Girls State, which will be held June 17-23 at Longwood University.

McDonnell will speak Friday, June 22, at 9:15 a.m. in Jarman Auditorium. Bolling will speak Tuesday, June 19, at 1:15 p.m., also in Jarman Auditorium.

About 605 rising high school seniors are expected to attend the citizenship seminar sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, in cooperation with many civic clubs and school groups.

Virginia Girls State has been held at Longwood since 1974 and was first held in 1947. The theme for this year's session, the 66th, is "Honor by Serving."

Participants, most of whom are nominated by their school and sponsored by their local chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary, conduct the affairs of municipal government after breaking up into two parties and 14 "cities." They elect a governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The new governor, who will replace Shelby Locke of West Springfield High School in Fairfax County, will return and preside over next year's session. Delegates also will chose two delegates to Girls Nation, to be held July 20-28 in Washington, D.C.
