Critically acclaimed poet/memoirist to speak at Longwood

September 9, 2013

Poet and memorist Kelle Groom

Poet and memoirist Kelle Groom will read from and discuss her works Monday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m. in Longwood University's Wygal Auditorium. The event is open to the public.

Groom’s memoir I Wore the Ocean in the Shape of a Girl is a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick, New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice selection and a Library Journal Best Memoir of 2011, among numerous honors. It has been called "an unflinching yet deeply poetic memoir that captures the rawness and urgency of addiction as well as the tenderness and heartbreak surrounding the loss of a son."

Groom also is the author of three poetry collections, Five Kingdoms, Luckily and Underwater City. She is currently Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at Sierra Nevada College. Her appearance is the second in this year’s Longwood Authors Series.
