Rock the Block

The first few weeks of the academic year are full of tradition—from move-in day to the G.A.M.E. to Convocation—but few annual events pack as much fun as Rock the Block.

A mini-festival, Rock the Block is a chance for Longwood students as well as members of the Farmville community to come together and enjoy food, freebies and fireworks—with fantastic live music to boot.

"Rock the Block is one of our most popular annual traditions," said Stacey Wilkerson, director of Longwood’s Office of First Year Experience. "Our students love the opportunity to have some fun once classes have begun and interact with this really special community they are now a part of. It’s an event we all look forward to."

The block party is set for Friday, Sept. 18, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Midtown Square and will feature plenty of free activities for adults, families and students. The evening will be capped by a fireworks display at dark.

The centerpiece of this year’s party is the live cover band Six Stylez, which is well-known around the region for its versatility and energetic stage show. They mix an assortment of styles into their performance—from classic rock ’n’ roll to danceable ’80s hits to current favorites.

In addition to Six Stylez, an open mic will take place on Crute Stage, which annually brings together talented town residents and students for home-grown music. There will also be carnival food, face painting, and a local business showcase with samples, coupons and plenty of giveaways.
