2010 Faculty & Staff News

Staff members Brenda Barringer and Matt Spalding are involved in the upcoming production of "RENT" by the Waterworks Players

April 2, 2010

Staff members Brenda Barringer (Capital Planning & Construction) and Matt Spalding (Conferences & Scheduling) are involved in the upcoming production of RENT by the Waterworks Players, a nonprofit community theater in Farmville.

Barringer is the musical director, and Spalding is playing one of the main roles, Benny, in the acclaimed musical, which will be presented April 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. Barringer and Spalding are both Longwood graduates, as is the stage manager, Brandon Nuckols. Also in the production are several Longwood students: Caroline Kramen is playing Maureen, Katie Robey is playing Mimi, Erin Wind is playing Joanne, and three other students, Jennifer Abel, Shelbi Bennett and Cheryl Hinterleitner, are playing multiple roles as part of the Company.

The award-winning rock opera by the late Jonathan Larson, based on Puccini's opera La Boheme, is about an impoverished community of young artists and musicians in New York City's East Village who are trying to survive and create under the shadow of AIDS. At the time of its last Broadway performance in 2008, some 12 years after its debut, it was the seventh longest running show in Broadway history.
