Dr. Pamela Petty, associate professor of literacy at Western Kentucky University (WKU), will give a Sankofa Lecture on Tuesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. in Orr Auditorium in the Hull Education Center on "We are the Village: Culture, Society, and the Role of Story." Petty, who has told stories professionally for about 15 years, believes deeply in the power of "story" and the way values and mores within tales both celebrate and transcend cultures. She maintains several storytelling webpages, and her Internet presence includes about 2,200 webpages at www.pampetty.com. The web sites include resources and information regarding her current research on adult literacy, serving underprepared populations, out-of-school programs, and the use of technology for teaching and learning. Petty, whose stories describe her childhood in rural Tennessee in the 1950s and ‘60s, is director of the Kentucky Adult Educators Literacy Institute at WKU. The Sankofa Lecture Series is sponsored by the College of Education and Human Services as a forum to discuss diverse ideas in education.
