International Coastal Cleanup events in the George Washington Memorial Parkway, a unit of the National Park Service (Arlington County, Alexandria and Fairfax County)

 

These parks and wildlife preserves are units of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, part of the National Park Service. All are located on the Potomac River, just off of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Families and individuals need not sign up -- just show up to help! Large groups interested in attending these cleanup events should contact Miguel Roberson, Park Interpreter, to learn which park most needs more volunteers. Phone: 703-289-2556. E-mail

WAIVER: All volunteers participating in cleanups at a National Park Service park must sign a NPS waiver. The waiver for children must be signed by their parents or legal guardian. Forms will be available at the parks, or print out the form and bring it with you:

Notes about these parks:
Daingerfield Island Park needs many volunteers! Lots of parking spots are available. This park is on the Potomac River, between Old Town Alexandria and Reagan National Airport.

Theodore Roosevelt Island Park has limited number of parking spots. Please bike in if you can.

Riverside Park. This park is south of Old Town Alexandria near Mount Vernon, off of the GW Parkway. Plenty of parking and trash! Sometimes, a bald eagle can be seen from this site.

Belle Haven Park and Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve (just south of Old Town Alexandria). These side-by-side parks need many volunteers! Lots of parking spots are available.


Arlington County
Barcroft Park in Arlington (4 Mile Run), organized by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment (ACE)

Fairfax County Park Authority’s Watershed Clean-Up Day -- SEVEN stream cleanups in Fairfax are being organized by Fairfax County for Saturday, October 18. Be part of the International Coastal Cleanup! Individuals, students, families, scouts and other community groups can help clear out the earth’s arteries by collecting tires, bed springs, bottles, cans and other debris. Give the waterways in your community a clean bill of health and earn the gratitude of your furred, feathered and scaled neighbors. Wear boots, old clothes and bring gloves. Trash bags and appreciation provided. This is a great community project!

We will have some gloves, but please bring gloves if possible. Directions: Belle Isle is an island in the James River that is easily reached by a footbridge that is located under the Robert E. Lee Bridge (Highway 1 and 301). From Downtown Richmond, get on East Byrd Street, then head South on South 5th Street (or South 7th Street) towards the James River. Both of these streets end at Tredegar Street. Turn RIGHT onto Tredegar Street, pass the Tredegar Iron Works, and park in the parking lot to your right (some street parking is also available). Look for the foot path that is under the Robert E. Lee Bridge, and walk over the river to Belle Isle.

Date of Cleanup: Saturday, September 20, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. NOTE: All volunteers must call the park and pre-register. Since vehicular access to False Cape State Park is prohibited, volunteers are asked to be in the parking lot of Little Island Park at 8:30 am on September 20. Park staff will come pick up the volunteers and take them to the beaches that need cleaning. Little Island Park is on Sandpiper Road, just north of False Cape.
