Scholarships and Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Why Study Abroad?  Scholarship Contest 2008:

at the Scholarship and Awards Banquet 2008

Longwood University Study Abroad Scholarships:

· All students who study abroad for at least a semester will receive a $1,000 Study Abroad Scholarship

· All students who study abroad for a half semester (student teachers) or for summer sessions in individual programs of at least 4 weeks will receive a $500 Study Abroad Scholarship

· Students who participate in short-term study abroad programs (2 to 4 weeks) may apply for one of the $500 Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarships (there are 4 scholarships available). 
Deadlines:   For winter programs, November 1.        For summer programs, February 1

· Modern Language Presidential Scholarships:  There are five $2,000 scholarships for semester study abroad programs for Modern Language Majors (who are required to spend at least a semester abroad).  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must submit a 300-word essay in English as a part of the application process. 

· WHY STUDY ABROAD?  Contest  Win a scholarship to study abroad!
And be a key player in getting the word out about study abroad!

First Prize:  $1,000 Study Abroad Scholarship
Second Prize:  $500 Study Abroad Scholarship
Topic:  Why Study Abroad?
Submission Deadline:  February 1, 2008

The winning entry will be incorporated into the “Why Study Abroad?” page on the Study Abroad Website. 

Applications for all the above scholarships are available in the racks outside the Office of International Affairs, Ruffner 146.  Instructions include completing the application form and submitting an essay addressing how the study abroad experience will benefit your total academic program and your future.

· Gilman Scholarships
Application Deadline: September of each year for spring scholarships.

The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a US State Department Travel Warning or in Cuba. · Freeman Asia-Asia Award Benefits:
This scholarship is given to undergraduate students who have demonstrated the need for financial assistance through filing a FAFSA. Summer awards up to $3,000 are given. · BUTEX North American Scholarships
This scholarship is open to all undergraduate students who have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student in a UK university which is a member of BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association). · National Security Language Initiative Scholarships:

· Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society:  Thirty-eight $1,000 study abroad scholarships are awarded each year. Students must have a minimum of 56 credit hours, but no more than 90 by the deadline.
