Academic Opportunities

Who is Eligible:

Students who have successfully completed four semesters of college-level German with a B average or better are eligible for the program. A cumulative grade-point average of B or better is an additional prerequisite for full acceptance. Students must have attained junior-year status prior to entering the University. the Heidelberg program offers courses through the Institute for German as a Foreign Language in German language, literature, linguistics, and culture and civilization. Students with advanced proficiency in German language may choose courses from the regular University catalog as well.

Transfer of Credit:

Grades are reported to the Heidelberg program Director who makes recommendations for credit and transfer through Heidelberg College. A transcript is sent to home institutions listing course titles, number of credit hours, and grades. Upon arrival, all students participate in a mandatory four-week Preliminary Course involving intensive listening, reading skills; advanced German grammar and cultural orientation. Two semester hours of credit are awarded. Prior to the actual semester, all students take the German Language Proficiency Exam for appropriate coursework placement. Students who pass the exam take coursework at the Institute for German as a Foreign Language and in other university departments.

Internships:

In addition to a variety of coursework offered, internships are available to qualified students at the end of either the first semester or academic year.

Study and Research Opportunities:

World-class libraries specializing in German-American Relations and American History at the university are open to students and researchers as well as the Hochschule fur Judische Studien Heidelberg is available for specific topic research.
