Announcing Scholarship Recipients, Virginia Chapter

The Virginia Chapter of AATSP recently announced the recipients of its first scholarships for summer study.  AATSP jointly sponsors one scholarship with the Embassy of Spain, and another with Cemanahuac Educational Community.

B. Gail Mabe, a teacher at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford County, Virginia will be spending 3 weeks at a Spanish university this summer.  The scholarship is awarded through the Embassy of Spain and covers 3 weeks of study, lodging, meals, and one weekend excursion.  Gail will receive help with her travel expenses from the Virginia Chapter of AATSP.

Tricia Marcarian, a teacher at Phoebus High School in Hampton City, Virginia will be spending 2 weeks at a school in Cuernavaca Mexico.  The scholarship is awarded through the Cemanahuac Educational Community and covers 2 weeks of study, lodging in a home, meals, and one weekend excursion.  Tricia will receive help with her travel expenses from the Virginia Chapter of AATSP.

The Chapter, together with our first scholarship recipients, greatly appreciates the association we have been able to arrange with the Embassy of Spain and with the Cemanahuac Educational Community.  We look forward to many years of collaboration with the Embassy and CEC to provide opportunities each year for two Virginia Chapter members to immerse themselves in the cultures and improve their linguistic abilities as well as their cultural knowledge.

Gail and Tricia will write articles about their experiences for various publications and will prepare presentations for the fall conference of the Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA).

Esther Burch, Honrada por el Capítulo de Virginia

Esther Burch, left, was honored on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the semi-annual meeting of our chapter at the University of Virginia.  Esther served our chapter faithfully and diligently for 18 years as our coordinator of the National Spanish Exams.  During her tenure, Virginia grew to have the largest number of participating students, finishing her career with over 5,000 student participants in 2007!   Sheila W. Cockey, right, President of AATSP-VA, presented Esther with a plaque commemorating her 18 years of dedication and a gift certificate for two people to the Boar’s Head Inn Sunday Brunch.  These remembrances are but a small way to express our gratitude for all that Esther did for our chapter.  We hope we will continue to see Esther at some of our gatherings in the future and we wish her a happy and healthy retirement from NSE!

¿Qué decís vosotros? ¿Qué tú dices? ¿Qué decís vos?: La variación lingüística en el mundo hispanohablante.
 
The Spanish-speaking world is a fountain of linguistic variation.  From one region to another, as well as from one segment of society to another, one can observe differences in pronunciation, forms and use of pronouns and verbs, different words to identify the same item, as well as the same word with very different meanings from region to region.  It is this linguistic diversity that makes the Spanish language such a fascinating object of study for dialectologists and sociolinguists.
 
Professors Fernando Tejedo and Joel Rini of the University of Virginia, together with Professor Roger Wright of the University of Liverpool, will explore with the participants of this workshop the most salient features of the major varieties of the Spanish language, and when relevant, their origins.  In addition, notions such as “language”, “dialect”, “variety”, “register”, “Castilian”, and “Spanish” will be considered and discussed, as well as what such variation means for the teaching of Spanish.
 
This workshop will begin with Registration and coffee at 8:30 and should run until 3 p.m.  It will be held at Zehmer Hall at the University of Virginia campus.

University of Virginia:  Marcel Velázquez Castro
February 26, 2008.  “El sujeto esclavista y las rutas del racismo en el Perú (1770-1895).” 

            Marcel Velázquez Castro is one of the foremost young scholars in Peru today.  In addition to his current teaching positions at the prestigious Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, he has authored two books, edited two books, and published a number of articles in the fields of both literary criticism and cultural studies. He also founded the literary journal Ajos & Zafiros, which he directed for six years, from 1998-2004. Velázquez has won a number of prestigious national awards for his essays, and his scholarship spans a variety of topics from the 19^th and 20^th centuries. Some of Velázquez’s areas of expertise include AfroPeruvian culture, gender and modernity in Latin America, Creole politics, political history (including the history of elections in 19^th century Peru), literary criticism and history (19^th and 20^th century), serial novels, and Latin American Neo-classicism, Romanticism, and vanguardia.

            Prof. Velázquez’s description of the lecture follows:

            “El sujeto esclavista es el nombre que proponemos para denominar los rasgos comunes del discurso y las estrategias cognoscitivas en la percepción del otro afrodescendiente. El sujeto esclavista es un presupuesto conceptual que no se define según quién es, sino por el lugar desde donde enuncia y cómo lo hace. Su función es delimitar la mirada, la palabra y la sensibilidad del intérprete de la cultura afroperuana.

            Esta conferencia estudia tres aspectos entrelazados: a) la construcción cultural  del afroperuano en el discurso político y literario de las elites limeñas; b) la conversión de los prejuicios étnicos coloniales en el racialismo moderno y su papel en la fundación artificial de la nación; y c) las paradojas de la nación republicana fundada simultáneamente en un orden abstracto homogéneo (comunidad de ciudadanos) y en la preservación de biotecnologías que garantizaban la desigualdad de una sociedad multiétnica.”

Biografía: Sheila W. Cockey
Posición:  Presidente

Sheila ha sido miembro del AATSP por casi 40 años, cubriendo su carrera de 35 años como maestra de español en King George High School y en Rappahannock Community College.  Ahora que está jubilada, continúa participando en la comunidad de educación por sus actividades de escribir por NCLRC, de presentar cursos de español para varios grupos de profesionales, de ser una consultora profesional, de ser intérprete voluntaria, y de servir como editora del FLAVA Bulletin. 

Durante su presidencia hemos visto el regreso de la Embajada de España y la presencia de otras embajadas a FLAVA, tenemos dos becas que patrocinamos en asociación con la Embajada de España y el Centro Educativo de Cemanahuac, organizamos dos fines de inmersión para profesores de español en asociación con el VDOE, tuvimos un concurso para diseñar un logotipo oficial para el capítulo, además de continuar con los excelentes programas ya existentes.

Biografía:  Janet Beckmann
Posición:  Secretaria

Janet Beckmann enseñó en el diósis de Arlington por muchos años y ahora está enseñando en el condado de Fairfax en su escuela secundaria nueva, South County.  El año pasado recibió una beca del Washington Post y asistió a la Universidad de Salamanca.  Ha servido como secretaria de la AATSP-VA por dos años.

Durante su primer plazo como secretaria para nuestro capítulo, ella nos ha representado a los dos congresos anuales, asistiendo a las reuniones de delegados, hablando con los funcionarios nacionales, y presentando una sesión.  En Virginia ha tenido un papel integral en la formación y la actuación de los fines de semana de inmersión para los maestros de español en Virginia.

AATSP Virginia EL ACTA 4 de mayo de 2002 El Acta de la reunión del capítulo de Virginia de la AATSP 4 de mayo de 2002 La sesión fue abierta por la presidenta, Helen Jones.  Se comenzó con la introducción de la lista de los nuevos oficios, quienes son:  por presidenta: Karen Falcon  por vice-presidenta: Barret Brown  por secretaria: Judy Dickerson    Fueron elegidas por aclamación.   Helen dijo que iba a continuar como redactora de El boletín.  Pam Ayuso va a continuar como tesorera del capítulo y Esther Burch continuará como directora de National Spanish Exam.  Antes de reunirse de nuevo en Richmond en octubre, Helen pide que los miembros piensen en personas o grupos que puedan entretenar al capítulo durante su reunión.  También pide que se le manden las ideas a su dirección electrónica: hjones@pen.k12.va.us o a la dirección de Barret Brown: jmibb@attb1.com.  También ella pide ideas nuevas para atraer a los profesores nuevos de la profesión para que se hagan miembros del capítulo.   Había preguntas sobre el examen nacional y el número de cintas mandadas a varias escuelas.  Esther dijo que tiene que pagar los gastos de los $2.75 que se cobra de cada estudiante por el examen.  Por eso, no pueden mandar más cintas a menos que la escuela las pague.   También Pam Ayuso dio su informe de tesorera.  Anunció que siempre le da el capítulo $200 a UVA como recompensa por los gastos por el taller de mayo.   Judy anunció que iba a comparar las dos listas de miembros de nacional y del capítulo para determinar si todos han pagado su cuota.  Si no, los estudiantes del profesor no pueden participar en el examen nacional.  Se necesita pagar la cuota nacional y la cuota del capítulo de Virginia para el primero de diciembre del año precedente si quiere la participación de los estudiantes en el examen nacional.      Respectuosamente,      Judith R.
