Honors College

Are you ready for a challenge?

The Cormier Honors College is a special opportunity for incoming students who have been high achievers academically throughout high school and desire continued academic challenges in college.

honors program

Incoming students are offered admission to the Honors College based on a review of their high school records, including an unweighted average of their core academic courses; a profile of college credit courses, especially through AP and IB; and SAT or ACT scores.

Honors Courses

Longwood offers several types of courses in the Honors College, including Honors sections of traditional courses and team-taught interdisciplinary courses. Students can choose Honors courses in disciplines ranging from Accounting to Sociology, as well as independent study. Longwood seniors may participate in the Senior Honors Research Program, which enables capable students to study intensively a subject of choice, thereby becoming acquainted with methods of research, organization of materials, and the presentation of results in a scholarly manner.

Graduating with Honors

Students participating in the program graduate with honors by successfully completing eight Honors classes, three of which must be at the 300-level or higher, completion of a senior-level Honors project, and a credit-bearing study abroad experience. Through the Honors College, recent students have studied border life in Texas, African folklore in Kenya, Shakespeare in England, and the breakup of the Soviet bloc in the Czech Republic.

The Honors Advantage

In addition to challenging coursework, Honors students enjoy a variety of out-of-class opportunities, priority registration, smaller classes, participation in regional and national Honors events, and Honors housing - complete with a computer/study lounge, and occasional retreats.
