Megan Lintecum

Picking a Fight with Hunger

Sophomore Megan Lintecum and fellow students answer call to support local nonprofit

College is about more than classrooms. It's about community, both on and off campus - and there's no better testament to that than the Cormier Honors College students at Longwood University. Inspired by assistant dean of the Honors College, professor Susan Bagby, the honors students routinely work with non-profit organizations, including Farmville Area Community Emergency Services, better known as FACES.

Located in Farmville, FACES gathers and distributes food to people in need in hopes of creating a hunger-free community.

"Working with FACES has been an amazing experience," said Longwood University sophomore and honors student Megan Lintecum. "Getting out into the community lets us see Farmville beyond just the university. And, unfortunately, like too many other communities, there are people in need. Being exposed to that is very enlightening - it makes you want to reach out and do more."

And more is exactly what Lintecum did.

When Professor Bagby approached Megan - the daughter of two Longwood University alumni, Barbara Solenberger Lintecum ('87) and Terry Lintecum ('86) - about asking her family's orchard, Fruit Hill Orchard in Palmrya, Va., to help supply FACES with fresh fruit, the answer was a no-brainer.

Megan and approximately 30 honors students traveled to Fruit Hill Orchard, working together to harvest more than 1,000 pounds of fresh apples for FACES.

"Longwood and Farmville have always been a very special place for my family," said Lintecum. "It's where my parents met and fell in love, and it's the only place I wanted to be when it was time for me to go to college. Having the chance to give back - and to make a difference in a community that has given so much to us- was an opportunity my family wouldn't have traded for the world."
