Annual Giving

Annual Giving. Daily Impact.

Longwood’s Annual Fund is the foundation of our University.

Although we are a state funded institution, less than 30% of our yearly budget comes from state funds. The remainder of the support comes from student tuition, as well as gifts from alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations. We rely on support of our dedicated friends to ensure the continued successes of Longwood and our future citizen leaders.

During Fiscal Year 2008-2009 gifts to the Longwood Fund (our university's only flexible giving accound) helped to:

  • Sponsor a dozen research projects
  • Provide scholarships for Longwood students studying abroad in the following areas: Thailand to study economics, Greece to study mathematics, Florence to study architecture, and Paris to study art and history
  • Sponsor Jim Merkle's on-campus visit to speak about his book "Radical Simplicity" and to kick off a two year sustainability focus
  • Fund the costs of sending 19 students to regional and national conferences to present research
  • And much more!

Snapshots from Annual Giving

Lancer Linelancerline_students

Last year over 40 current students called to update you on the university. During this process they raised over $300,000 in critical funding for the school!

This fall, they are calling you again! If you want to bypass a call and make a gift now, simply click here to support Longwood for the 2009-2010 fiscal year!

Terry Challenge

Last May, Nancy Patterson Terry '90 and her husband Michael doubled the impact of gifts given to the Longwood Fund by pledging $25,000 in the form of a dollar-for-dollar match of gifts given to the Longwood Fund during May.

This challenge was so well-received that the Longwood Fund earned more than $50,000 in May-surpassing even our greatest goal!

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Terry Challenge!

Connections Program

This past summer, five students visited with alumni in their areas to reconnect them to Longwood.

These students loved meeting with our alumni and getting to hear past stories and experiences.

We hope you will be able to meet one of these exceptional students, if the opportunity arises!

“As a Longwood alumnus I have had the honor of being able to see our University change and transform. I have seen the exciting updates and have also witnessed firsthand the impact that private donations make on the University.

I know how hard it is to prioritize when you are juggling family, work, and community commitments – but supporting Longwood, at whatever level is best for each of us, is a worthy endeavor.”
