About the Annual Fund

Funds given to Longwood University through the Annual Fund are used during the year in which they are received to meet current needs, including providing vital flexible annual funding for scholarships, academic departments, presidential initiatives, campus safety and beautification, public relations and publications, and alumni programs. The Annual Fund also allows the University to respond to unanticipated opportunities or emergencies with the knowledge that the funds are available to cover the costs. These private gifts supplement public appropriations, tuition and fees and must be renewed each year as Longwood pursues its mission.

The state budget deficit has hit Longwood hard. The total impact on Longwood's budget in 2003 and 2004 equals $4.9 million in state reductions thus far, including an 8% reduction in workforce, with more cuts being considered during the 2003 General Assembly session. Private support is more important than ever before. Please give generously!

The Annual Fund is broken into the following funds:

Longwood Fund
The Longwood Fund is the only fund that is unrestricted, and your support enables the University to use the funds where they are needed the most.

Parents Fund
Parent support of the Annual Fund shows satisfaction and is a vote of confidence for the education provided by Longwood University. Parents Fund donations typically support one particular campus initiative, such as campus safety.

Other Program Support
Gifts may also be designated for specific academic departments, athletic programs, and scholarship funds. In supporting these areas, the University also encourages donors to consider designating a portion of their gift to the Longwood Fund to allow the University some flexibility in meeting overall institutional priorities.

Remember, all gifts to the Annual Fund through June 30, 2003 count toward a turning point: The Campaign for Longwood and its goal of $32 million. The Annual Fund portion of the goal is $5 million, and we need your support to achieve success!

The Annual Fund gives every alumnus, friend and parent the opportunity to participate in a turning point: The Campaign for Longwood. Achieving the Campaign goal will require a broad and deep commitment from the people that have made Longwood what it is today. By joining The Campaign for Longwood, you will be helping Longwood strengthen existing educational programs while enabling the institution to seize new opportunities in the future. Please consider making a gift today!
