President’s Welcome- Becca Shelton

  • ¾ of Becca’s meetings this year have been virtual - she’s doing a great job!

Acknowledge New Members

Greetings from the Longwood Foundation Board- Tammy Jones

  • Endowment + Annual giving has raised 2.1 Million in scholarship dollars
  • 840 Scholarships Awarded this year- mainly to juniors, students with an average of 3.42 GPA, covering many areas of study
  • Scholarship process has moved to Longwood Foundation
  • All but one matching donor from the most recent campaign donors were from the Foundation Board
  • Longwood CARES raised $18,500 for emergency issues, funded from pockets of LU staff

  • Welcome new members in September
  • Love Your Longwood Day (rescheduled as Longwood Together)
  • Scholarship office has helped us with the Alumni Legacy Scholarship
  • Alumni Awards renaming approved

 Upcoming meetings & events

  • Acknowledge Alumni Award 2020 recipients at a ceremony during Alumni Reunion Weekend in 2021
  • New building names for Johns and Moss Halls
  • New Academic building named Allen Hall
  • Rotunda will now be referred as North, South, East, West halls
  • Ring Ceremony did not happen this semester, rings were sent via mail

Vice President’s Report- Erica Howell

  • Virtual New Board Member Orientation coming soon
  • Board Buddies! (A current board member on the same committee as new members)

Treasurer’s Report- Ryan Catherwood

  • Operating budget is for this fiscal year is TBD, the university is waiting on state allocations which will hopefully provide some clarity
  • OACS received a grant from Enterprise to use for career services programming, and continues to bring in revenue streams with career fair registrations
  • Liberty Mutual has insurance benefit for Longwood young alumni, additional revenue stream for the office

Discussion:

  • Is there another insurance company we could partner with? Current Greek organizations have a similar established partnership.

 

Committee Reports

Board Relations Committee- Erica Howell

  • See Vice President’s Report

Alumni Events Committee- Linda Norris  

  • The Events Committee: Plans social events and volunteer activities within the Alumni Board, and assist OACS with regional/on-campus events                                    

Alumni Awards Committee- Chris Davis & Kathy Fox

  • Delay on nominations, but with new awards date everything is on track
  • Look for an October/November vote for the Alumni Awards recipients
  • All members will be receiving spreadsheet of nominees, be presented Committee’s recommendations

Structure and Function Committee- Byron Bracey

  • New committee to have emphasis on diversity and student engagement
  • With adding the Secretary position, can use committee for more than structural edits
  • Key goals to amplify Career Services and Black Alumni initiatives and programming

Discussion:

  • Bryon shared his positive experience on the Equity Task force as school re-opened this fall
  • Is there an initiative to increase diversity in faculty on campus?
                                         

Office of Alumni and Career Services Update- Ryan Catherwood

CAMPUS

  • Longwood’s small class sizes, residence halls with suites, smaller campus, and rural location have made socially-distanced learning successful
  • Not at goal for freshman class - 869 which is up over last year, but lower than goal
  • MBA program went over 200 students, historically class sizes are around 20
  • 17% of courses are online, to help faculty
  • 5% are modified
  • 52% of courses are face-to-face
  • For students who asked to be fully online, 100% of requests granted
  • Students who filled out FAFSA forms enrolled at a smaller percentage this year
  • No budget approved by the state yet, but cuts will be used for students financial aid
  • Salary cuts for Longwood employees were for additional healthcare staff

OACS

  • Fall Halloween virtual engagement event - think chili, pumpkin carving, and more!
  • Nursing and Healthcare fairs available this fall via Handshake
  • 1 Hour a Month program still going strong!
  • Virtual Holiday Break work shadow program as students return home for break
  • Micro internship program over Spring Break to complete project to show for job applications

 New Business

  • Next meeting will vote on motion to approve new committee
