Raised Hands

Longwood's 1 Hour a Month volunteer program makes it easy for alumni to get involved and have a tangible impact on the university with easy and fun activities that you can do in various bundles of time.

These mix and match activities can be tailored to your interests and available time. Choose four different 15-minute bundles, do the same 15-minute bundle four times or choose an activity that takes one hour – it's up to you!

So Many Ways to Participate

Just a few of the fun and easy ways to be involved:

  • Share Longwood events and initiatives on social media
  • Encourage a high school student to apply to Longwood
  • Cheer on the Lancers in your area or come back to campus for a game

It's Easy to Do

Once you sign up, you'll receive monthly email reminders about your participation. The emails will also include opportunities to attend exclusive events, participate in unique initiatives, and even earn extra Lancers gear.

Longwood Swag

Not only do you help spread the word about Longwood and support current students and fellow alumni, you earn great Lancers gear: a water bottle; t-shirt; cooler; hat; or moleskin notebook.

Alumni Love This Program

Susan A. Smith '79, a national board certified  teacher in Alaska, has participated in this initiative for the past two years. She loves being a "flag raiser" who borrows a Lancer flag and takes a picture of it at interesting locations.

"I love highlighting places out of Virginia with the banner," says Susan, who has raised the Longwood flag throughout Alaska including at the Anchorage Zoo and the village of Takotna during the 2018 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. "This program is easy to do and is a fun way to still participate with Longwood University," she says.

Chris Tunstall '88, has raised the Longwood banner in Nags Head, NC which he says is his family’s favorite place besides Farmville. A fan of social media, he enjoys spreading the word "about Longwood and all the great things going on in Farmville and with its students and alums," he says.

Chris, who is Assistant Vice President, Human Resources for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, says that  he is "always looking for ways that I can pay it forward to students because I am a Lancer 4 Life!"

He encourages fellow alumni to give one hour a month to Longwood. "It’s a great program to re-connect with old Lancer friends, meet new Lancers and show pride in our great university," says Chris.
