The value of a Longwood education pays dividends long after graduation. Your years at Longwood not only shape your intellectual and cultural pursuits, they provide a lifelong network of friends and colleagues.
The Power of Longwood's Alumni Network
Dale Baake '07, knows firsthand the power of the Longwood network. An active alumnus, Dale is the vice-president of Longwood's alumni board and will begin serving as the board president in July 2019. He says that his gratitude for the ways that Longwood shaped him professionally and personally and helped him become a citizen-leader cemented his commitment to the school.
A financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, Baake regularly attends career fairs on campus and often hires Longwood students for internships and graduates for jobs with his company.
Longwood connections also have helped Baake grow his wealth management business.
"When I reach out to a Longwood alum, I let them know that, as a fellow Lancer, I'm someone they can trust if they need help with financial services or investments," he says. "I have gained a lot of clients that way."
Grow Your Network
Baake says that since Longwood is a fairly small school, there is a tight alumni network. He encourages Lancers to get involved in their local alumni network. "We have technology that we can use to connect you with your network," he says. "It can help find others in your profession and allows you to find jobs and opportunities suitable for you."
"If you're just out of college, the first place to look is the alumni network," says Baake. "We're really a family and we help each other." He says that LinkedIn provides a great opportunity to connect with Longwood graduates "whether you know them on a first name basis or you have never met them before."
Fun and Friendship
Maybe you're not interested in professional networking. That's no reason not to connect with the Longwood network! Baake says that the fun he has from connecting with his "huge Longwood family" brings joy to his life. "Whether it's Mega Reunion or a regional event, Longwood does a great job of entertaining and bringing people together," he says. "Coming together with your fellow Longwood graduates offers camaraderie and the opportunity to share memories of your time on campus."
