Denise Penick holds a BS in Art Education from Longwood College as well as a Masters Degree in Art Education through VCU, with a studio concentration in painting and an emphasis in museum education. In addition to adjunct art faculty at Longwood University, Denise teaches elementary art at Fuqua School. Awards include Virginia Elementary Art Educator for 2000-2001 and Longwood Center for the Visual Arts Individual Achievement in the Arts Award. Additionally, Denise was selected as a Fulbright Teacher Fund Scholar that included three weeks travel to Japan with immersion in the culture.
Exhibition of her oil paintings include venues such as Virginia Museum Fine Arts Education Center, Virginia Beach Contemporary Arts Center and the Jefferson Center in Roanoke, Virginia as well as the LCVA. The subject matter of Denise's oil paintings is varied. Her work is realistic with challenging compositions that are highly detailed. The subject often breaks the plane of a two-dimensional surface appearing to protrude from the canvass toward the viewer. Most recently, the study of a single flower with the subtle variances in color and texture has been the focus of her work.
Additionally, Denise has a business of handcrafted beaded jewelry with natural gemstones and wirework in sterling and other metals. The shape, pattern, color and texture of the beads are my real tools in designing jewelry. Depending on my mood, I will create something earthy and chunky, a delicate piece with crystals and pearls or an eclectic mix. Each piece, with an infinite combination of materials and design elements is a visual treat. With, Personal Adornments, Denise has a website and participates in an extensive show schedule. www.personaladornments.com
