Professor Spivey is an art historian specializing in late 20th/21st century art and contemporary theory. Her research, which explores theoretical issues of embodiment and gender performance in visual culture, is currently focused on the relationship of dance performance to the practice of glassblowing. In addition to several years working in the museum world, she has taught undergraduates at the Meyer School of Art at the University of Akron and the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she was the recipient of the 2004-2005 Distinguished Teaching Award for Non-tenured faculty.

Spivey joined Longwood in 2006 where she teaches classes in art history and art appreciation.
