This
course presents an introduction to American Sign Language, English
translations, Deaf culture, and the Deaf experience. (3 credits)

Through
this course, students will develop the following knowledge, skills, and
dispositions:
1.
Demonstrate knowledge of the ten basic American Sign Language
(ASL) grammar rules using the 500 signs taught during this course.
2.
Analyze ASL structures and signs.
3.
Create ASL sentences and write English translations of these
sentences.
4.
Compare various modes of communication used with Deaf people.
5.
Think visually, “seeing” language instead of hearing it.
6.
Communicate effectively with Deaf children and adults.
7.
Demonstrate sensitivity toward Deaf people, knowledgeable of Deaf culture
and experiences.

1.
Required readings and video will be
posted online or sent to your email address. A schedule for assigned readings will
be available at least two weeks before they are due. This information may be
discussed in class and will be included on quizzes and exams.
2.
Complete all reading assignments by the date due and
complete one midterm, ten quizzes, and one cumulative exam
covering the material from the textbook, class sessions, class notes and
activities.
3.
Choose one of the following projects (all stories and songs
must be approved by the instructor no later than 27 Oct 09):
1.
Analyze a short story, such as a children’s storybook, and
translate it into American Sign Language. Learn the appropriate ASL signs,
practice telling the story to at least three other classmates, then perform the
story for the instructor (to be videotaped) during the last three weeks of
class. A grading checklist will be distributed before the Fall Break so
students may begin preparing for the final presentations.
2.
Analyze a song, and translate it into American Sign
Language. Learn the appropriate ASL signs, practice performing the song to at
least three other classmates, then perform the song for the instructor (to be
videotaped) during the last three weeks of class. A grading checklist will be

performances.
3.
Write a 5-page paper comparing the modes of communication
discussed in class. Discuss American Sign Language, pidgin sign language,
Signed English (all variations), Rochester Method, Cued Speech, Visual Phonics,
and Auditory/Oral methods. A grading checklist will be distributed before the
Fall Break so students may begin preparing for the final document. You will be
asked to briefly share salient points from your paper during the last class.

Students
are expected to attend all class sessions. You must notify the instructor in
advance if you must miss a class for illness, participation in a
college-sponsored activity, or for a recognizable emergency. Your absence from
class must be excused if make-up privileges are to be granted. Late work will
not be accepted without prior approval from the instructor and reasonable
justification for lateness. If you miss over 10% of the class sessions for
unexcused absences, your grade may be lowered by one letter. A grade of F may
be assigned if you miss 25% of the class sessions for any combination of
excused or unexcused absences. Points will be deducted from your final grade
for each day missed up to a total of five points.
Honor Code
Students
are expected to abide by the Longwood College Honor Policy. All tests and
assignments are to be pledged.
Students
requiring modifications may submit a plan from the Longwood Academic Support
Center. The instructor will provide necessary accommodations to assist students
with disabilities.
