Scholarship Information
The following scholarships are awarded by the admissions
office.
The Paul P. Hicks, Jr. Scholarship (established in 2002)
This scholarship was established by Paul P. Hicks Jr. a member of the
Longwood College Foundation board. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a
full-time undergraduate student majoring in a discipline within the Department
of Natural Sciences. Preference will be given to students interested in the
field of dentistry. This scholarship may be renewed.
The Donald A. Merkle Scholarship (established in 2001)
This scholarship was established by Linda Marie Long, a 1986 graduate of
Longwood College. The recipient shall be a freshman full-time enrolled
undergraduate student, declaring a major in biology, who demonstrates
outstanding potential. This scholarship may be renewed.
Alton M. Harvill, Jr. Scholarship (established in 1998)
This scholarship is merit-based and shall be awarded to incoming freshman
pursuing a degree in the natural sciences.
Camper-Smith Scholarship (established in 1986)
Jennifer Camper Smith was a 1968 graduate of Longwood College and served on the
Foundation Board from 1993-1997. This scholarship was established to honor her
father, John Thomas Camper and Jennifer Camper Smith. This merit-based
scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman full-time undergraduate
student pursuing a degree in the Department of Natural Sciences with a GPA of
3.2 or above on a 4.0 system from an accredited high school. This scholarship
may be renewed.
The following scholarships are awarded by the Department of
Biological and Environmental Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Wayne H. Tinnell-Hines Scholarship (established in 2004)
This scholarship was established by Lynn Hines Harper, class of 1973. The
recipient of this scholarship shall be a full-time enrolled undergraduate
student that has completed a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours by the end of
the semester in which the recipient applies for this scholarship and seeking a
degree in the natural sciences, preferably biology. The recipient shall be a
student from the Southside Virginia area, specifically the counties of
Brunswick, Charlotte, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg,
Notoway, Southampton and Sussex; or Vance and Warrant counties in North
Carolina. This scholarship may be renewed if the student continues to show
satisfactory progress towards graduation.
Vera B. Remsburg Biology Scholarship (established in
2002)
The award, which will be given annually to a Longwood biology major, was created
through a bequest to the VAS by Vera Baron Remsburg, a 1942 Longwood graduate
who was active in the Academy and taught biology for 41 years. A $1,000
scholarship will be presented to a rising senior majoring in biology at the May
meeting of VAS. This student should be actively engaged in a research project
and will present the results of their research at the May meeting of VAS during
their senior year. The student will also receive a year membership to VAS during
their senior year.
Wayne H. Tinnell Scholarship (established in 1993)
This scholarship was established by Mary Lou Gambill, class of 1974, and her
husband Mark Gambill, to honor Dr. Wayne H. Tinnell, Professor of Biology at
Longwood College, for his outstanding skill as a professor and mentor. The
recipient must be majoring in biology and seeking a degree from Longwood
University. The recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.0 for all courses taken
at Longwood University and have a GPA of 3.25 in courses in the biology major. The
recipient must have completed a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours by the end
of the semester in which the recipient applies for this scholarship and have
completed at least three biology courses at Longwood University. This
scholarship may be renewed if the recipient enrolls in, and successfully completes
two additional four-hour biology courses at Longwood University during the fall
and spring semesters of the academic year in which the original award was made.
The student must attain a 3.0 GPA in both courses and maintain an overall GPA of
3.0 to qualify for a one year renewal.
Lucile Walton Biology Scholarship (established in 1988)
This scholarship was established through bequest from the estate of Miss
Walton in 1984 a biology major at Longwood College. The recipient of this
scholarship shall be an upper-class student majoring in biology and participate
in a natural history contest devised by the biology faculty. This scholarship
may be renewed.
Hull Biology Scholarship (established in 1981)
This scholarship was established by Andrew Hull, Foundation Board Director and
Duvahl-Ridgway Hull, former Rector and member of the Board of Visitors. It is
the intent of the Hull scholarship that recipients are full-time students who
intend to earn a bachelor’s degree from Longwood University prior to pursuing
further graduate or professional education before beginning their career. The
factors of (1) participation and (2) evidence of leadership potential should be
taken into consideration when selecting students for the Hull Scholarship. It
is the donor’s intent that the student be a biology major with a serious intent
to become a medical doctor. Students with a serious intent to enter a
medically-related occupation will be eligible if no student planning to become a
medical doctor is eligible. The recipient must be a resident of Virginia and
not be a member of a social sorority or fraternity. Financial need will be the
first consideration in awarding any scholarship, but after all worthy candidates
who have need have been chosen, the award can be awarded to worthy candidates
who do not meet financial need criteria. This scholarship may be renewed.
Edith Stevens Scholarship (established in 1968)
In 1968, the Alpha Kappa Gamma (now Mortar Board) Scholarship, was
established in 1947 in memory of Edith Stevens. This scholarship was combined
with the Edith Stevens Fund in 1968 to form the Edith Steven’s Scholarship. The
recipient shall be a junior full-time undergraduate student majoring in biology
who has a 3.5 or above GPA at Longwood University.
