Mr. William H. Baxter
President and CEO
Retail Merchants Association
Richmond, Virginia
March 4,
2008 Tuesday
Place: Hiner Auditorium
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Bill Baxter started his business career as a trainee at Thalhimers
Department Stores, and 27 years later he left the company as its
senior vice president responsible for store operations and budgets
for 27 department store branches in four states with 3,700 employees
reporting to/through him.
During those years, Mr. Baxter created many unique business
initiatives such as the “model store” program, which took the
weakest performing Thalhimer branch to the #1 position among a peer
group of 113 stores; the “Tuesday Club” for senior citizens that
increased Tuesday’s sales from 6 percent of a week’s business to 13
percent and grew overall sales by $12,000,000 annually; and the
“Corporate Night” program which produced $500,000 in additional
sales for the seven participating stores in four hours on a Sunday
evening.
When the May Company purchased Thalhimers and converted it into
Hechts, Mr. Baxter left the company. He briefly served as a regional
manager for Home Quarters Warehouse before joining the Retail
Merchants Association (RMA), where he has served as its President
and Chief Executive Officer for the past 14 years, and is only the
4th person to serve as CEO in the organization’s 101-year history.
Through his leadership, the RMA expanded from a “local” retail trade
association representing Greater Richmond to a regional organization
directly servicing more than half of Virginia’s retail business
community. The RMA recently joined the Hampton Roads’ Retail
Alliance® in the formation of the Virginia Retail Federation, an LLC
that represents the legislative and governmental interest of all
retailers in Virginia. The RMA has invested well over $6 million in
initiatives and events across metropolitan Richmond. The largest
investment to date was a $3 million multi-year grant to the Greater
Richmond Convention and Visitors Bureau, a move that paved the way
for four governmental jurisdictions to come together and build
Greater Richmond’s 700,000 square foot convention center.
Mr. Baxter has served as an officer or member of many other local
and regional boards and organizations. He is a graduate of Virginia
Tech, and The Executive Program of the Darden School of Business at
the University of Virginia. He is also Board Certified by the
American Society of Association Executives. |
