Athletic Complex - Lacrosse/ Field Hockey/ Soccer Fields

Longwood has constructed a new set of Athletic fields, press boxes, and bleachers.  The facility features an artificial surface for our Lacrosse program as well as a natural surface for the Soccer program.

Status  

 

The First phase of the New Athletic Fields project is complete!  Plans are in the works now to address coverage for the score keeper’s table and certain aesthetic issues. The concrete structures are anticipated to receive exterior landscaping screens to allow greenery to grow up and around the buildings.

Athletic Training Addition to Willet

An addition of 3000+ square feet to Willet was just recently completed.  This structure was built to support the Sports Medicine / Rehabilitation and Training program at Longwood. 

Status

Construction is complete! The new addition is up and operational!

Baseball/ Softball Field Renovation

Each field is scheduled to receive locker room and public restroom facilities.  The Softball field will also be receiving a new press box and bleachers.

Status

The restroom and locker room facilities have begun construction should be complete by late summer.

Blackwell

The upstairs portion of Blackwell (where the bookstore used to be) is being renovated! When the project is complete it used for large events and gatherings.

Status

Fred Koontz (Ruffner architect) is currently working on designs.  Substantial completion is expected by May 2009.

Bicentennial Park

The stone surrounding has been replaced. In many areas the wall had fallen into disrepair and as a result the park was collapsing.  

Status

All done! They moved fast!

Bridges to Lancer Park

In order for residents of Lancer Park to have a more direct route to campus a pedestrian and vehicular bridges will be constructed by the Longwood University Real Estate Foundation.  The pedestrian bridge will begin by building 801 H in Lancer Park and extend over Rails to Trails and West Third Street onto Grove Street.  The vehicular bridge will provide ingress and egress to Lancer park from West Third Street just south of B&G auto. This bridge will also cross over Rail to Trails and connect to Lancer Park near the 801 H building.

Status

English construction (the firm that rebuilt Ruffner and that is currently building the new Communication Studies Building) has been awarded the contract.  Currently they are in the first phase of the project which involves soil sampling and geotechnical studies. The estimated time frame for completion of the bridges is Fall 2009.

Cox Residence Hall Renovations

This residence hall renovation began in May 2007. When complete it will include central air conditioning, updated mechanical and building systems, and improved lounge and public areas.

Status

The Cox renovation is in full swing!  It is both on schedule and on budget!  Interior furnishings have been selected.  The main floor level will be very comparable to the recently remodeled Wheeler Residence Hall.  The lounge on the south side of the building will be especially nice with attention being given to showcase the existing rounded bay window area!  

This residence hall will be back on line for fall 2008! Better than Ever!

Communication Studies and Theatre Arts Building

English Construction (the firm that re-built Ruffner) is hard at work building the new Communication Studies and Theatre Arts Building. They broke ground on March 22, 2007.  This new facility is located on the southern end of Brock Commons south of Bedford Hall along Franklin Street.  

Status

The masonry work is well underway. Brick samples, as well as the pre-cast concrete samples have been selected.  Plans are being made now to begin selection of new equipment to meet the programmatic needs of the building. The project is both on schedule and on budget!  Substantial completion is expected in January 2009.

Curry Interior Facelift

During the summer of 2008 plans are being made to take Curry Residence Hall off-line for the summer months. During this time ceiling tiles, doors, and floor tiles will be replaced.

Status

Over the summer the lobby will get a fresh look, asbestos tile will be removed, shower stall pans will be replaced, and some minor painting will be done.  Curry will be off line next summer as well in order to further improve the conditions of the building.

Frazer Roof

A new roof will be installed on Frazer Residence Hall.

Status

This project has been set for the Summer of 2008.

Intramural Fields at Lancer Park

The Longwood University Real Estate Foundation has made plans to build two new intramural playing fields as well as a maintenance building and public restrooms at Lancer Park. One field will be an artificial turf. The other will be covered with bermuda grass. The design will allow for multiple uses of the area.

Status

English construction (the firm that rebuilt Ruffner and that is currently building the new Communication Studies Building) has been awarded the contract.  Construction has begun and mounds of dirt have been moved! s Completion in expected in Fall / Winter 2008.

Jarman Renovation

After the University has completed the Communication Studies and Theatre Arts Building, and once Blackwell Hall has reopened, work will begin on the renovation of Jarman Hall.  Jarman is expected to receive work on the HVAC system, the electrical system, as well as a number of interior upgrades.  The project hopes to begin in June 2009 and be substantially complete by Fall of 2010.

Status

In the next few months the University will begin the process of selecting and Architectural and Engineering firm.

Jeffers Auditorium

Jeffers Auditorium will be undergoing major HVAC work.

Status

The project is currently in the working drawings phase and is scheduled to begin this summer.

Modernize Heating Plant                                           

This project will construct a replacement central steam plant.  The plant will provide steam to 98% of the campus.  The new plant will consist of three wood-fired boilers, fuel handling storage system, fuel handling system and other support equipment.

Status

The heating plant expansion will begin construction in the Summer of 2008.  The addition will be located on the current Barlow Field.

Storm Water Control Area / Park

Plans are underway for a new pond to control the under ground stream that runs through campus and storm water runoff.  Around this pond, a park area will be added.  It will be ideal for studying, picnicking, or the occasional outdoor class.

Status

The storm water management project is scheduled to begin construction later this summer or early fall.  The property is in the process of being purchased from the Longwood University Real Estate Foundation.

Willett Hall Renovation

Willett Hall is being renovated to meet athletics requirements.  It is being outfitted with new locker rooms and HVAC system.

Status

The new chiller has been installed.  The locker room renovation is under way!  The HVAC work should be bid in early spring.

Six Year Capital Plan 2008-2014

The Six Year Capital Plan is submitted to the state and updated every two years.  It is from this plan that funding and authority are given to the University concerning which projects they can pursue.
