Academic Advising Resources

Role of the Advisor: Advisors assist students in clarifying their life or career goals and in developing educational plans for the realization of those goals. The ultimate responsibility for making decisions rests with the student. Advisors can help monitor the student's progress and suggest the use of institutional services.

Upon admission to Longwood University, if a student has indicated a major of interest, he or she is directed to that department for advising. If a student is undecided about a major, he or she is directed to the Academic and Career Advising Center.

The Academic & Career Advising Center staff will:

  • Provide an honest, safe, confidential and respectful environment where you can ask questions, express concerns, and discuss your interests

  • Offer resources for self assessment and exploration

  • Help you understand college and department policies and procedures

  • Assist you in making academic and career related decisions

  • Connect you with academic support and/or other campus resources

Role of the Student
: While advisors are here to assist students, the ultimate responsibility for making decisions and meeting the graduation requirements rests with you, the student.

Additionally, you are expected to:

  • Schedule regular appointments with your advisor - advising should not be a once a semester meeting. Instead, meet with your advisor a few times during the semester to provide updates/progress reports and discuss any problems you may be encountering.

  • Keep your appointments and be sure to call and reschedule if you need to cancel.

  • Prepare for your appointments by completing any appropriate paperwork (registration worksheets, checklists, etc.), reviewing your academic transcript, and creating a list of questions/topics of discussion.

  • Research Longwood's policies, procedures, and programs/majors. Come prepared with questions regarding your research.

  • Discuss long range goals with your advisor and actively evaluate your progress toward these goals.

  • Follow through on referrals.

  • Accept responsibility for your actions and decisions.

  • Seek help when you need it.
