Anthropology

Longwood's Anthropology department offers a broad range of courses preparing majors for fields across a variety of career paths from cultural anthropology to archaeology.  The study of human behavior, Anthropology, allows majors an often unique and objective way in viewing the world around us.  Anthropology, along with other majors, offers a variety of classes, preparing students for real world experience.  Courses such as the Longwood Archaeology Field School has traveled all the way to the British Virgin Islands, providing students with international relations experience.  Archaeology Field School has  maintained its current site at the Randy K. Wade Site in Charlotte County, Virginia, the location of a thousand year old Saponi Indian site.  Anthropology explores cultural and social relations, human biology and evolution, languages, music, art and architecture, and human habitats.  Anthropology seeks to examine how human behavior changes over time, how various cultures are different as well as similar to one another.  The four fields of Anthropology include cultural anthropology, linguistics, physical anthropology, and archaeology.  Many Anthropologists specialize in specific geographical areas, such as West Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, North America, and so on.   These geographical locations are also broken down into particular populations in a locale or region.  While Anthropologists are known for their curiosity, Anthropologists incorporate a strict belief in objective research, maintaining a sense of third-hand observation.

Jane Goodall- "If you really want something, and really work hard, and take advantage of opportunities, and never give up, you will find a way."
