Requirements by Academic Department
for Earning Credit

Approval & Registration

Because each department handles internships in ways uniquely their own, you will want to discuss this matter with your Faculty Advisor, Chair of the Department, or Internship Coordinator for the department granting credit before making any definite plans.

Approval for internship credit must be arranged prior to registering and prior to the beginning of the internship.

NOTE:   All students completing an internship (fall, spring or summer semesters; on or away from campus; paid or unpaid) are required to pay tuition and required fees.  In addition, most internships require a supervisory course fee.  This fee is established by the department creating the internship.  Please visit the Office of Cashiering & Student Account web page for additional information regarding tuition and required fee rates:  http://www.longwood.edu/studentaccounts/tuitionfees.htm.

Requirements by Academic Department

Every attempt has been made to state the major and minor requirements as clearly as possible. However, it is strongly recommended that every student maintain close communication with the academic advisor assigned in order to plan their program in a fashion best suited to the student’s individual goals and needs.

Please click on your major below for more information regarding policies and procedures you will need to follow in order to earn academic credit.

Credit Hours

Internship credit should be closely related to academic major and/or career goals.  Individual departments reserve the right to refuse credit toward the major for any internship not considered relevant to its content area.

Each academic discipline should establish the number of credit hours earned during the registration process; however, credit is awarded typically at the rate of 1 hour of credit for a minimum of 40 clock hours of on-site activity (2 credits hours=80 hours, 3 credit hours =120 hours, etc.).

Getting the Grade

All credit bearing internships are graded.

Supervision consists of a Site Supervisor (a qualified professional at the internship site) and a Faculty Supervisor (a member of the Longwood University teaching faculty from the department in which the student plans to earn academic credit for the internship).  The Site Supervisor evaluates the work completed by the student.  The Faculty Supervisor, in consultation with the Site Supervisor and the Student, is responsible for maintenance of academic quality and assigns a final course grade.

Faculty Supervisors assign grades based on completion of requirements and evaluations of the Site Supervisor.  Requirements may include but are not limited to daily journals, papers, interviews, reports, and /or projects.  These matters should be thoroughly discussed with Faculty Supervisors.  Additionally, unless otherwise stated in the course syllabus, the grading policy for internships is the same as the University’s grading policy as stated in the University Catalog.

Risk Management

It is the responsibility of each student to complete and return the document in Appendix B to the academic department granting credit.
