Can I get a job in this field?

Speech-Language Pathology is a rapidly growing field with job growth expected to be over 50% in Virginia in this decade. Virginia is one of the top ten states with the highest predicted job growth. The Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks speech-language pathology among the top 30 (of 700) fastest growing occupations over the next decade. Where do speech-language pathologists work?

SLPs work in public schools, hospitals, private practice, rehabilitation centers, clinics, and universities.

What can I expect to earn as a speech-language pathologist?

ASHA reports that the 2003 basic median annual salary for ASHA certified speech-language pathologists was $45,000 for those on a academic contract year (9 or 10 months) and $52,600 for those on a calendar year contract (11 or 12 months).

Is there tuition assistance available for the pre-requisite courses?

The Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) is providing tuition assistance to in-state residents to enroll in the Longwood Online undergraduate pre-requisite courses. Is financial assistance available for graduate programs?

There are many opportunities for financial assistance in graduate school. Many programs offer the highest qualified students assistantships. In addition, grants, scholarships, and loans are available through a variety of sources. For more information about financial assistance, visit  ASHA

Is there a certain sequence that must be followed in the coursework?  

There is a recommended sequence of courses.  Though you may enter the program at a different time, some courses will require a pre-requisite

How long will it take me to complete a graduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders?

Master’s programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders can generally be completed in two calendar years for full-time students. Some universities offer part-time programs.
