DEAN'S WELCOME PAGE

Greetings,

When you come to Longwood University and enroll in a major in the College of Education and Human Services (CEHS), you should know that you have arrived at a “special” place.  Our college has invested heavily to offer our students technologically advanced facilities, strong academic programs, and a nurturing environment in which to learn, grow—and have some fun.  We pride ourselves on the easy accessibility and caring attitude our faculty offer as they mentor our students and support their academic success.  Our faculty, who are experts in their fields and in their classrooms, share a rich tradition especially in the excellent Longwood history of teacher preparation, and we are striving to use that to move toward greatness in every program!

The CEHS prides itself on the fact that many of the nation’s best educators and administrators, social workers, therapeutic recreation specialists, exercise scientists, speech and language therapists, library media specialists, and school/community counselors have come from this college.  This is largely due to the reality of classroom instruction that comes alive for students through hours of multiple field experiences and internships which empower our students.  Through them, students develop confidence in their ability to be effective and to excel in their chosen careers.  Field experiences are not only a requisite for graduation from the college, they are a way of life.  All of the programs in the CEHS go beyond minimum standards in providing hands-on experience in real world settings.  We begin early in students’ programs, and continue throughout, providing experiences in diverse settings, with quality supervision, and increasing responsibilities.

Please consider visiting not only our main campus in Farmville but our regional educational centers in Powhatan and South Boston.  See what thousands of students have discovered, and why they are now, like me, loyal Longwood supporters for life.  I welcome you and look forward to seeing you on Brock Commons.

 Dr. “Dee” Jones,

Dean, College of Education and Human Services
