About
Dr. Jones
Dr. Deneese L. Jones began her service as Professor and Dean
of the College of Education and Human Services at Longwood University
on June 25, 2005. She succeeded Dr. Judy Johnson who had served as interim
dean of the college for the previous year.
Dr. Jones earned her Ph. D. in
Curriculum and Instruction and her Master of Education degree in the same
discipline from Texas
A&M University.
Her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education is from Texas Woman’s
University. A native of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Jones moved to Farmville from the University of Kentucky
at Lexington, KY where she devoted fourteen years of her
educational expertise at the state, national, and international level.
Before her appointment at Longwood University,
Dr. Jones served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum
& Instruction in the College
of Education teaching
undergraduate and graduate literacy classes. For four years, she provided her
expertise as an Associate Dean of the Graduate School
for the university. Later, she was an appointed member of the University
President’s executive cabinet as Chair of the Presidents Commission on
Diversity at the University
of Kentucky for two
years. She also served as the co-founder and Director of the Center for
the Study of Academic Achievement in Learning Environments and as a
co-researcher for the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development in
the University of Kentucky’s College of Education.
She garnered more than 2.5 million dollars in grant funding for research in
the area of literacy instruction for diverse populations. From 1998-2001, Dr. Jones was elected to serve
as editor of Action in Teacher Education, the national referred
journal for the Association of Teacher Educators. Dr. Jones was appointed an
American Council on Education Fellow for 2002-2003 and served at the University of Kansas in the Office of the Chancellor
under Dr. Robert Hemenway.
In the area of professional
dissemination, she is the co-author of a field experience textbook, Preparing
Student Teachers for Pluralistic Classrooms, published by Allyn and
Bacon. A former public school, classroom teacher in inner-city environments
of Texas,
her research area is equity pedagogy which focuses on culturally responsive
teaching practices. She is a widely published scholar in this area and is an
expert in teacher education and multicultural education.
Dr. Jones is also the recipient
of three University of Kentucky teaching awards, two Outstanding Service
Awards from the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, an
outstanding recognition award from the Association of Teacher Educators, an Outstanding
Researcher Award from the Kentucky Reading Association, and a Torch of
Excellence Award from the University of Kentucky Alumni Association for her
administrative leadership in graduate education. Most recently, Dr. Jones has been honored
with the 2006 Outstanding Alumni Award from Texas A&M for her career
scholarship, teaching, and service.
Dr. Jones
is married to Mr. Stephen C. Jones; they have two adult daughters and two
grandsons who live in Louisville,
KY.
