Elementary teachingA goal of the elementary education program at Longwood University is to help shape teacher candidates into educators who are reflective citizen leaders. Through a rigorous elementary education program that combines on-site field experiences with pedagogy classes, teacher candidates learn how to plan for, implement, and manage instruction. They also learn how to evaluate and assess student learning. Through numerous liberal studies and methods classes, teacher candidates increase their knowledge of subject and learn classroom behavior management skills. As candidates for the teaching profession, elementary education majors learn communication skills and take on many professional responsibilities. Teacher candidates become proficient at using technology and they are taught to value diversity in their chosen profession.
