Longwood Online Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Pre-Requisites:
Pre-Requisite Coursework

Master’s programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders require either a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or an out-of-discipline bachelor’s degree with the foundation coursework necessary to succeed in the advanced level courses in graduate school.

“Longwood Online SLP Master’s Pre-Requisites” offers the necessary preparatory courses. Though you may enter the program at any time, some courses will require a pre-requisite.


Note: Other necessary pre-requisite coursework for graduate school includes courses in Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics. That coursework is not offered through this series of courses.

ONLINE COURSE OFFERINGS

  • CSDS 285 Language Development
    An introduction to the normal acquisition of language, including the components of language, the physical, social, and cognitive bases for language, theories of language development, and how language evolves from infancy through adulthood. Cultural influences on language development will also be explored. 3 credits
  • CSDS 290  Morphology and Syntax
    Learn the terminology and its application to analyzing language samples. 1 credit. This course is not required as part of the pre-requisite series, but is offered to assist students in learning the terminology necessary for analyzing language samples.

  • CSDS 307 PHONETICS
    The phonetic structure of the English Language, its dialects and derivations; clinical application of the International Phonetic Alphabet 3 credit.

  • CSDS 313 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF SPEECH AND HEARING MECHANISMS 
    Anatomical structures of the human communication system and the physiology of inter-related movements 3 credits Pre-requisite: Biology 101 or permission of instructor

  • CSDS 314 Phonology and Language Disorders 
    The identification and evaluation of phonological and language disorders in children and adolescents, etiological factors, and basic assessment and management procedures for a culturally and linguistically diverse populations 3 credits Prerequisites: CSDS 285 & 307 or permission of instructor

  • CSDS 361 INTRODUCTION TO AUDIOLOGY
    Physics of sound; physiology of hearing; types and amounts of hearing loss; hearing evaluation: audiometry 3 credits Pre-requisite: CSDS 313 or permission of instructor

  • CSDS 450 Speech Science 
    An introduction to speech science theory, instrumentation, and measurement Emphasis on normal speech perception and production 3 credits Pre-requisites: CSDS 307 and 313

  • CSDS 455 Neurology in Human Communication 
    An overview of neurology as it relates to communication and Communication Sciences and Disorders. 3 credits Prerequisite: CSDS 313

 We advise, based on feedback from students in previous semesters, that students not enroll in more 6 credit hours per semester.

ONLINE COURSE OFFERINGS

 Note: Virginia residents have priority registration for all SLPonline courses.

 

Registrations for Spring 2009 must be submitted NO LATER than December 1, 2008.

           

There is a high demand for these courses, and the earlier you submit your registration, the better your chance of being enrolled in the courses. Students will receive a letter of confirmation of their enrollment during the week of December 15.

Spring 2009

All spring session online courses in CSDS run from January 12 – April 24, 2009. Syllabi for these courses will be posted by December 15.
