Virginia Waterways Cleanup Events -- 2013

Part of the International Coastal Cleanup

  • ABOUT the Virginia Waterways Cleanup:
    • Annual statewide event to clean our waterways & collect valuable data about trash & litter in our waterways
    • Cleanups are held between September 1 and October 31 every year
    • More than 68,000 Virginians have volunteered in Virginia since 1995
    • Hands-on stewardship of our water resources
    • You CAN make a difference! Volunteer, lead a cleanup or help support this important statewide effort by contributing to CVW

This is one of the largest and most heavily used parks in all of Alexandria and is in constant need of cleaning and restoration efforts. Last year volunteers removed more than a TON of litter. This year we hope to increase the number of volunteers and have an even bigger impact on our park. Please come out and show your support!

Gloves and trash bags will be provided, please come dressed to get dirty and wear rubber boots if you have them.

Canoe Trip! On the Staunton River (Randolph Creek) Please join us for a canoe trip down the Staunton River. Volunteers are needed to help pick up trash found along the river's edge and record the data for use in the International Coastal Cleanups Annual Report on our Oceans. Email jennifer.duffey@dcr.virginia.gov or call (434) 454-4312 for information and registration. Volunteers meet at the Clover Visitor Center, 1035 Fort Hill Trail, Randolph, VA and should wear suitable shoes (no open toes or flip-flops), bring hats, sun screen, bug spray and water for your comfort, as desired.

Friends of Pocahontas State Park is participating in the 2013 Annual Virginia Waterways Cleanup with a cleanup event at Swift Creek Lake in Pocahontas State Park. This is a documented cleanup event, where teams scour the lake and stream edges on water and on land, and record the items collected. For those wishing to go on the water, canoes, paddles and flotation devices will be available free of charge. The cleanup event will be held on Saturday, October 26th, from 9 AM to noon, at the boat dock. In case of rain, the event will be postponed one day. Check in and register with the site captain, who will be located between the parking lot and the canoe station. Bags and documentation forms will be provided. If you are not familiar with the park, ask for directions at the park entry station, and request a volunteer parking pass. Portsmouth City Nov 2 Paradise Creek Nature Park We will be meeting by the park map at Paradise Creek Nature Park located at: 1141 Victory Boulevard, Portsmouth, VA 23702. Please wear comfortable clothes that can get messy and are appropriate for the weather. This event will be held rain or shine. All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
