Model Community Project
The Ocean Conservancy has a goal to reduce the amount of solid waste (trash, debris, litter) that enters the world's oceans. It has organized a number of "Model Community Projects" to research the best methods to educate people on how they can be responsible for the waste they create. Model Community projects are supported through a grant from Philip Morris, USA. Some Model Community projects are working to reduce litter on fishing piers and from beachside restaurants.
Clean Virginia Waterways was selected by The Ocean Conservancy to design and implement a program aimed at increasing the amount of litter prevention education in coastal communities. Working in conjunction with the City of Hampton, Virginia, CVW developed signs and table tentcards that coastal businesses (fast food restaurants, take-out restaurants, convenience stores) could use to educate their customers about the need to dispose of waste properly. Signs were also placed on the carts of vendors who are permitted to sell food and drinks at Hampton's beaches.
More on this project will be posted soon.
