Dave Matthews Band Supports Teacher Workshops about Water

These teachers from Albemarle County attended the Clean Virginia Waterways' and Longwood University's "Water Workshop for Educators" in 2003.

Here, they are testing the pH of a water sample.

A series of Clean Virginia Waterways workshops for educators was funded through a grant from the Dave Matthews Band. The workshops, held in Charlottesville the summer and fall 2003, gave Virginia's schoolteachers new tools as they educate their students about watersheds, water quality, stewardship and management issues.

The workshops were conducted by Jeremy Lloyd, Ph.D., Asst. Professor of Science Education in Longwood University's Department of Natural Sciences and Kathleen M. Register, Executive Director of Clean Virginia Waterways. They are co-authors of the recently published Virginia's Water Resources: A Tool for Teachers which was the result of a grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment. The teacher workshops provided lesson plans and content for teachers of grades K-12 about water, water monitoring, and how students can protect and restore streamside habitats.

The lesson plans and content information for teachers found in Virginia's Water Resources: A Tool for Teachers were all written specifically to help teachers provide Meaningful Watershed Experiences for Virginia schoolchildren, one of the goals of the Chesapeake 2000 Bay Agreement and Virginia's Environmental Education Plan. The materials are organized to support the Virginia Standards of Learning, and were also carefully written to follow the inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning science recommended by both the National Science Education Standards and the Standards of Learning.
