Why do we do it?

Much of the marine debris we find on beaches and in oceans originates upstream—in rivers, lakes and other drainage systems. The effects of this debris on Earth's habitats and biological resources are devastating. In addition to posing a threat to human health, marine debris kills birds, fish, seals and sea turtles through entanglement and ingestion. That is why our cleanups are on inland waterways as well as coastal areas. Learn more about the impact litter has on the aquatic environment by clicking here.

Litter and debris in our waterways is PREVENTABLE. Our shopping bags, balloons, fishing line, cigarettes, fast-food containers and other waste items need never reach our streams, rivers, bays, and oceans! We all hold the answer in our hands. Learn more about solutions and pollution prevention ideas.
