Help Joshua Bolt

Joshua is a brilliant, funny, and joyful ten-year-old! He reads, draws, writes poetry, solves math equations, creeps, climbs, and stacks things!

He also has a severe brain injury. His brain injury is commonly called cerebral palsy. The Bolt family is implementing an intensive home-based program of physical, intellectual, and social development for Joshua. This treatment program is prescribed by The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (

The Bolts need fun-loving volunteers both to help and to play! There are even some projects you can help with from a distance.

F.A.C.E.S., is a nonprofit food bank focused on providing emergency and supplementary food to qualified residents of the local area and surrounding counties. Volunteers provide weekly food distribution from its pantry to eligible members in the Farmville-Prince Edward area. It distributes over 500 bags of food 52 weeks a year to its client base. Volunteers can assist:

  • Thursday mornings, unloading and sorting shipments of food on from 9am-noon
  • Thursday nights, 'bagging parties' from 5pm-7pm, when bags of food are filled for Saturday's distribution

FACES accepts volunteers on a limited basis from 7.30 to 11 a.m. Saturdays. If you are coming on Saturdays as a group of more than five people, please call the facility on Friday after 10 a.m. at 392-6277 first, as they often have too many volunteers on a Saturday.

The Southside SPCA

Volunteer with The Southside SPCA. Are you an animal lover? Want to help homeless pets find homes and receive great care while they’re waiting for their FUR-ever home? Our local “friends of” COOLE committee hosts monthly fundraisers in the Farmville area, and is looking for volunteers!

Meetings & fundraisers are 1x/month each, typically evenings.

Helping Hands Volunteer Program

The Helping Hands Volunteer Program is designed to provide the Volunteer with an opportunity to work with the residents in a group activity setting such as playing Bingo, music activities, games, making crafts, reading, assisting with letter writing, and other scheduled activities.

The Woodland, Inc.

Service or Special Project Program 

The Service Learning Project at The Woodland, Inc., is designed to accommodate groups of students from various campus organizations who wish to provide a consistent service to our residents monthly, bi-monthly, weekly, or even on a one-time basis. Examples of a Service Learning Project could include developing an activity for the residents and being responsible for implementing it to a group of residents, hosting an event for the residents, reading group, book clubs, etc.. The volunteer group will coordinate with our Activities director to determine an appropriate activity.

The Path to Volunteerism at The Woodland, Inc. At The Woodland, Inc., we strongly encourage volunteerism and embrace the opportunities that Longwood can bring to our residents. Interested volunteers who would like to be involved in our program, which has daily opportunities, should contact Janet Bunnell, The Volunteer Coordinator to discuss their needs and she will work with them to ensure that a proper fit is made that utilizes their talents for a beneficial impact on our residents.

The volunteer will be required to fill out an application and the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to set up a start date. The Volunteer will go through a brief orientation which addresses patient privacy and confidentiality, safety within the facility, and professional conduct.
