CONVOCATION CEREMONY:
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008

Convocation Speaker:
Secretary of Natural Resources L. Preston Bryant, Jr.
L. Preston Bryant, Jr., serves as Secretary of Natural Resources in the
cabinet of Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine.
Prior to joining Governor Kaine’s cabinet, Secretary Bryant served in the
Virginia House of Delegates for 10 years, where he sponsored landmark
legislation to help preserve more than one million acres of nontidal
wetlands, streamline the state’s stormwater management programs, and create
a nutrient credit trading program to advance upgrades to more than a hundred
wastewater treatment facilities that discharge into Virginia waters.
Secretary Bryant also was a partner in a Virginia-based engineering,
surveying, and planning firm that specialized in the design of large-scale
residential, commercial and industrial developments as well as
transportation facilities.
Secretary Bryant was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received his B.A.
in English from Randolph-Macon College, a master’s degree in the humanities
from the University of Richmond, and an M.A. in modern British literature
from the University of London. He and his wife, Liz, live in Richmond.
CONVOCATION BASICS

Line up will be on the sidewalk in front of Grainger and Ruffner.
Seniors and cappers should report to this location at 3:15 p.m.
or as soon as you are dismissed from classes ending at 3:15.

Faculty
and Junior Marshals will assist you in lining up for the
procession and recessional.

Seniors
should wear their academic gown (no hood) and dark shoes. You
may purchase caps and gowns in the Longwood Bookstore, or
contact them with questions at 391-1240.

Cappers
bring the decorated caps or the senior brings his/her own cap.

SENIOR CAPPING! THE FUN PART OF CONVOCATION!

Each
senior asks an underclassman to serve as his/her little brother
or sister (capper). The capper decorates the senior's
mortarboard with mementos of the senior's Longwood experience
and "caps" his/her senior at the appropriate time in the
ceremony.

Each
senior may have ONLY ONE CAPPER.
-
Seniors
may elect to cap each other or not have a capper.
