Why do I need an internship?

Internships are required for all Longwood students as part of the General Education curriculum (Goal 15).  Beyond their presence as a part of the University's curriculum, internships are exceptional ways for students to apply and test the theories and skills they have learned in their coursework at Longwood.  Plus, students gain practical experience that may prove beneficial when they are entering the job market.

How do I find an internship?

Your search for an internship actually begins with your involvement on campus.  Many campus activities can help you develop skills that can help you land an internship.  It's unlikely that you'll walk right out of Farmville and into an internship with MTV, but if you start by working at WMLU, and getting an internship with a radio station in your hometown, you can work your way up to a big-time internship!

The best resource for Longwood students is our Career Center, which keeps up-to-date listings of employers who are seeking applicants for internships and full-time positions, as well as instructions for internship approval.

The Communication Studies program also announces internship possibilities throughout the school year, so make sure to check your Longwood campus e-mail regularly.

One of the best ways to obtain an internship is still good old-fashioned networking.  If you're looking for an internship, everybody you know should know about your search.

When should I complete my internship?
Most students complete COMM 492 (part of the Comm Studies core) during the summer between their junior and senior year.  You must have completed 24 hours of COMM classes and have a GPA of 2.5 in Comm Studies in order to take COMM 492.

If you do not have enough credits to enroll in COMM 492, or if you have already completed this requirement, you may be eligible to complete internship credits under course number COMM 392.  See you academic advisor for details.

When should I apply for internships?

Internship deadlines vary widely.  Most are due at the end of the fall semester or beginning of the spring semester.  If you plan to complete an internship over the summer, you should begin identifying potential internship options no later than Fall Break.  Make a list of the internships fo which you wish to apply, and their deadlines.  If you've applied and haven't heard, be sure to follow up.  Lots of people get jobs and internships just because they communicate to the employer that they're the person who is most interested.

What qualifications do I have to meet?

You must have completed 24 hours in Comm Studies, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in your Communication classes.  You also must complete sessions with the Career Center, as described in the Internship Guidelines.

How do I get my internship approved and get registered?

In order to get approved and registered, you must first locate and secure an internship.
Once you have the details available, you must complete the Internship Approval Form, and an Internship Description, as described in the Internship Guidelines below.  once your internship has been approved by the Internship Supervisor, a member of the Comm program will enroll you in the appropriate section of COMM 492 or COMM 392.
